What are the Unicode Tables
and where do they go?

The Unicode tables are the universal code page tables which provide international language support capabilities. These tables are required by utilities compiled using Novell's NetWare support libraries, including those provided by Novell, especially when accessing a Directory Services Server.

Normally, the Unicode tables are installed by the automated SETUP facility provided by Novell in the Client 32 and VLM Client Requester kits. However, anyone who shortcuts or avoids using the installation process may not have the Unicode tables properly installed.

Improper or incomplete installation of the Unicode tables may result in NetWare aware utilities from Novell or third parties failing to load due to 'Unicode initialization' errors. To avoid such errors, Novell added the following comments to the Client Requester documentation:

For the Unicode tables to load properly they must be in one of the following areas:

    1. The current working directory.
    2. The directory the application was loaded from.
    3. A directory named NLS beneath the load directory.
    4. The workstation's search path.

The Unicode directory structure is NLS (which contains the Unicode files) and NLS\ENGLISH (or other such appropriate language which contains the associated .MSG files).

The easiest method to use to insure complete installation and ready access is as follows:
Use the Client Requester kit SETUP facility to install ALL the required files (drivers and support files, including .MSG and .### Unicode tables - where ### represents the country code page, e.g. 001 for the U.S.).

Define the CLIENT\NLS path as part of the PATH= User Environment Table (UET) entry in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

Define the appropriate language name using the LANGUAGE = User Environment Table (UET) entry (e.g., LANGUAGE=ENGLISH).

Following these simple setup procedures will insure that NetWare aware utilities can locate the necessary Unicode tables to insure full NetWare v4 NDS and international language support.
