Insight into the
DSTrace SET Parameter

Name: DSTrace
Category: Directory Services
(Can be set in STARTUP.NCF)
(Cannot be changed if Server Console is secured)
Default: (None)
(Maximum Length = 79)
Description: Displays internal NetWare Directory Service (NDS) activity and Server to Server synchronization events. As an undocumented parameter, caution should be exercised if used.

Once DSTrace has been enabled (set to ON), the following switches can be used to display Directory Services activity that is being tracked:

Example:

SET DSTrace = +[switch] to enable the switch
SET DSTrace = -[switch] to disable the switch

Note: The following are supported in DS build 310. Some may not be supported in prior releases.
AUDIT +AUDIT shows auditing events.
AUTHEN +AUTHEN show connection authentication activity.
BACKLINK +BACKLINK shows relationship of external references to objects.
BLINK +BLINK shows relationship of external references to objects.
COLL +COLL shows collision events (objects which already exist).
COLLISION +COLLISION shows collision events (objects which already exist).
DEBUG +DEBUG shows all low level DS activity.
(Note: Not recommended for use on a production Server. May cause the Server to enter the debugger.)
DSA +DSA shows low level DS Agent activity.
DSAGENT +DSAGENT shows low level DS Agent activity.
E +E shows errors which occur during DS processing.
EMU +EMU shows Bindery Emulation activity.
ERR +ERR shows errors which occur during DS processing.
ERRET (Note: The state of this switch is currently unknown.)
ERROR +ERROR shows errors which occur during DS processing.
FRAG +FRAG shows fragmented packet handling.
I +I inspects the activity associated with the cleanup processes.
IN +IN shows inbound synchronization activity.
INIT +INIT shows initialization events.
INSPECTOR +INSPECTOR inspects the activity associated with the cleanup processes.
J +J shows cleanup process activity.
JANITOR +JANITOR shows cleanup process activity.
LIMBER +LIMBER shows Server connectivity checks.
LOCKING +LOCKING shows low level NDS file lock activity.
(Note: Generates a LOT of messages which are mostly of little value other than to show NDS file I/O activity.)
LOCKS +LOCKS shows low level NDS file lock activity.
(Note: Generates a LOT of messages which are mostly of little value other than to show NDS file I/O activity.)
MERGE +MERGE show Directory Services merge activity.
MISC +MISC shows miscellaneous (non-switch related) events.
PART +PART show partition activity.
RECMAN +RECMAN shows Record Manager (low level DIB) access.
REPAIR +REPAIR shows DSREPAIR activity.
RESNAME +RESNAME resolves object names in logged events.
RN +RN resolves object names in logged events.
S +S shows synchronization traffic, include the object information.
SAP +SAP shows Service Advertising Protocol (SAP) activity.
SCHEMA +SCHEMA shows schema synchronization activity.
SKULKER +SKULKER shows synchronization traffic, include the object information.
STREAMS +STREAMS shows streams handling of events.
SYNC +SYNC shows synchronization traffic, include the object information.
TIMEVECTOR +TIMEVECTOR displays comparisons of the Partition Time Vectors.
TV +TV displays comparisons of the Partition Time Vectors.
VC +VC shows Virtual Client (Server-to-Server Authenticated connection) activity.
VCLIENT +VCLIENT shows Virtual Client (Server-to-Server Authenticated connection) activity.

Once DSTrace has been enabled (set to ON), the following switches can be used to force Directory Services events:

Example:

SET DSTrace = [switch] - to force the activity to occur

Note: The following are supported in DS build 310. Some may not be supported in prior releases.
*. Reload the DS.NLM (re-initialize the database).
*B Immediate activation of the Backlink process (external reference resolution).
*F Immediate activation of the janitor cleanup process.
*G Discontinue synchronization attempt with current Server and change the Server status to Down.
*H Immediate activation of the synchronization process.
*L Immediate activation of the Server connectivity checking process.
*R Reset the DS Trace File (only valid if SET TTF = ON).
*SS Schedule an immediate synchronization of the schema.
*U Forces the Directory Services state to the UP (or active) state.
